Bra Selector caught up with the busy Laura Ann Smith, who won Star in a Bra 2010 last week for a wee chat. Curvy 28HH Laura stood pipped Kentish contestants Anna Broadley (2nd) and Lauren Sadler (3rd) to become the face and curves of big boob lingerie brand Curvy Kate.
After a head earned break our interviewee will take over from last year's winner Lauren Colfer to represent real women, modelling for competition organisers Curvy Kate and Brastop.
Congratulations Laura Ann Smith! How does it feel to be Star in a Bra 2010?
It feels great thanks. I'm still pinching myself because I didn't think I would win, but I'm really happy to have won and want to say thanks to everyone who voted for me.
How did you find out about the Star in a Bra competition?
I had been on the mailing list for Brastop for sometime as I have bought lots of underwear from there in the past. I had thought about entering last year but chose not to in the end. This year I decided just to go for it and I'm glad I did!
Tell me a little about yourself
I'm 25 years of age, I own a hair and beauty salon in Bonnybridge Scotland called Smiths hairdressing. I stay with my partner Chris and our Shar Pei dog. In my spare time I enjoy relaxing with family and friends. Hobby wise I have done Krav Maga in the past and I have taken up running. I recently completed the Race For Life event in Stirling with my sister Louise and friend Arlene, and really enjoyed it. I come from a large family, with five sisters and a brother, all of the girls have curvy figures too and as my brother gets older he is getting curvier too!! (only joking Daniel). All in all I'm just a normal person, whatever 'normal' is.
Ed: Krav Maga (pronounced /ˌkrɑːv məˈɡɑː/; Hebrew: קרב מגע, IPA: [ˈkʁav maˈɡa], lit. "contact combat" or "close combat") is an eclectic hand-to-hand combat system developed in Israel which involves wrestling, grappling and striking techniques, mostly known for its extremely efficient and brutal counter-attacks, as it is also taught to elite special forces around the world Not a girl to mess with!
Did you previously know about Curvy Kate?
Yes, I had already bought some stuff from the range and really liked it. I wouldn't have felt comfortable being the face of a brand that I didn't have personal positive experience of.
What made you want to enter the competition?
I had thought about entering last year, but like most women the thought of having my photos on the Internet scared me a little. When I saw the competition come up again this year I thought I should just go for it. Everyone has been really supportive, the main thing is that Curvy Kate is designed for everyday women, not catwalk models. The fact that the range recognises the fact that curvy women should have the option of wearing affordable, comfortable and glamorous underwear appealed to me.
Until recently, large cup bras had been more difficult to shop for. What experiences have you had through the years?
I would agree that there are time where getting nice clothes and underwear can be a challenge. Thankfully, having found Curvy Kate I can now buy the kind of underwear I would like to wear without having to go to the ends of the earth to find something in my size.
You mentioned in your competition entry that big boobs runs in the family, has it helped having siblings to share tips with?
I'm the youngest, so I had the advantage of being able to get advice from my sisters in relation to where to shop. It also helped me accept the body type I have as they have similar bodies. I think it's really important that people are not made to think that there is something abnormal about not being a size 6.
As many of us know big boobs can be heavy and difficult to manage, did you ever consider breast reduction?
No, I understand why people may make that choice but it's not one I have ever really thought about.
What are your favourite bras, brands, swimwear?
Freya, Panache, and obviously Curvy Kate!!
Where do you like to shop?
I do most of my shopping on the Internet, I find that it takes far less time than conventional shopping. Having my own business means that I work long hours and I don't always have the time to spare. That said, the odd day of pampering myself by going shopping is nice.
I think we'll be seeing alot more of you in the year to come, do you have any plans yet?
No, just to enjoy the experience, and to hopefully help curvy women feel great about being curvy. I'm also looking forward to meeting the rest of the Curvy Kate team.
Thank you Laura - we look forward to catching up with you when you join the Curvy Kate team for your first shoots!
